Angophora bakeri [Myrtaceae]; Narrow-leaved 'apple'

It doesn’t have the smooth, muscular skin or contorted form of its cousin the Sydney red gum (Angophora costata), however it makes up for this with its fine, bamboo-like foliage and subtle glaucous tone.

In my experience this plant is extremely fast growing (at least in wet clay loam, which was where we trialled it). Thriving and growing to 9m from a 200mm pot in four years it then snapped at the base in a storm. I suspect that slightly less rich conditions would solve this issue — as I’ve seen it performing well in Sydney Park and on impoverished sandstone in nature.

We are using this on sandy soil with success. An elegant species that is severely underrated.
