ECOTONAL HOTEL
This hotel project in Surry Hills recently had its development application approved. A mix of deep soil, facade planter boxes, green roofs and other treatments, this design contains planting on all seven levels. The planting design is based on ecotonal gradients that are seen in Australian vegetation, whereby plant communities will change across space in response to exposure, aspect, soil depth, moisture and fire regime. Between each plant community is an area of transition (or in ecology, ‘ecotone’) where ambiguity and intermingling occurs. It is often the ecotones that are most compelling.
