Persoonia levis [Proteaceae]
Beautiful shrub with large leaves and flaky black bark that peels to expose red beneath. Dry sclerophyll forest on sandy, low-nutrient soils. After bushfire, plants can resprout from epicormic buds, and seed germination is triggered. Therefore . Unlike most Proteaceae, fruit of the genus Persoonia are fleshy.
Persoonia Levis is notoriously hard to propagate from seed or cutting, one of a few reasons why it is not seen in plantings. Nonetheless, we do know of some nurseries in Sydney who have been able to get them going, namely Western Sydney Bush Native Nursery, and Harvest Seeds and Native Plants.
We are trialling this species on well drained, sandy or mineral-rich soils in a couple of projects. Updates will come in time.
